How to Display a Christmas Market Mug Collection

Shelves, racks and labels for a collection that keeps growing

What's the best way to display Christmas market mugs?

Open shelves are the most popular choice: mugs stand upright, the designs face out and adding a new one each year is easy. Shallow shelves (10–15 cm deep) show one row without hiding anything behind it. Collectors with a lot of mugs often give them a whole bookcase or a glass-fronted cabinet, which also keeps the dust off.

How do you arrange a collection?

Pick the order that tells the story you care about:

  • By market, oldest year to newest, so you can see how one market's design changed.
  • By year, so each shelf is one season of travel.
  • By country or city, which works well with a map on the wall next to it.
  • By color or style, if the look matters most. Boot mugs, heart mugs and stemmed mugs make a striking row of their own.

How should you label the mugs?

Small labels or place cards with the market, city and year help visitors (and you, ten years from now). Write them before you forget: many mugs don't print the year, and similar designs from different years are easy to mix up. Your collection on Market Mugs is a good place to keep the record, with notes on where and when you got each one.

Can you hang mugs instead?

Yes. Mug hooks under a shelf or cup hooks screwed into a wall rail save space and suit everyday mugs you still drink from. Check the handle is sound first; a hairline crack can give way under the mug's own weight.

How do you keep mugs safe on display?

  • Put a dab of museum putty under each mug on open shelves, especially if you have children, pets or a door that slams.
  • Keep them out of strong direct sunlight if the decoration is a decal rather than glaze.
  • Dust them with a soft brush. If they need washing, hand-wash them: a dishwasher can fade gold rims and printed designs over time.

What about a seasonal display?

Many collectors keep most mugs packed away and bring them out in Advent, grouped on a sideboard with the year's new additions in front. If you do, wrap each mug separately when you pack them up again, as for the flight home.
